In 2011, I gave a workshop using Matisse cut-out lettering as inspiration, but it was rather difficult to isolate his letters as his lettering really needed the context of his imagery as well. It is a good moment to show my student’s work!
We painted sheets of paper with bright acrylic and then did free lettering and image cutting. Here are the results.
Top: display of details of everyone’s work.
Bright clasp: Maggie Dobson
Live in the Sun: Tessa Case
Bottom: Su Bonfanti (using overlays of coloured tissue)
The idea was to try using free cutting as a way of producing interesting letterforms, and then of course using bright pure colours. We had exemplars of LombardicVersals as inspiration.
